Honda Service Bulletin 18-044 (June 2018) covers eligible 2017 Civic Type R units with the MIL on and DTC P0035 (turbocharger bypass control solenoid valve circuit high), displaying a Rev Match System/Emissions System message; the fix replaces the engine wire harness after heat and connector vibration caused an open circuit at the solenoid valve connector.

Known issues for this generation
The FL5 was covered by NHTSA recall 23V-229 (2023 model year only): the driver's seat cushion frame could be improperly welded and break under load, and Honda replaced the front seat cushion frame assembly on the roughly 640 affected units. In late 2024, NHTSA recall 24V-744 covered 2023-2025 Civic Type R alongside several other Honda/Acura models sharing the same electric power steering gearbox: a swollen worm wheel and excessive spring preload increased steering friction, and dealers replaced the gearbox's spring, spring seat, and end cap. American Honda also released Service Bulletin 25-023 in March 2025, a PGM-FI software update for 2023-2025 Type R units with the MIL on and DTC P0369 (camshaft position actuator noise misread by the PCM).

What generation is the 2019 Honda Civic Type R?
FK8 generation (2017-2021), hatchback only.
Why was there no 2022 Honda Civic Type R?
The FK8 ended production after the 2021 model year and the redesigned FL5 did not launch in the US until the 2023 model year, leaving a one-year gap.
Does the Honda Civic Type R have transmission problems?
FK8-generation (2017-2021) owners have widely reported 2nd-gear grinding and lockouts in the 6-speed manual; Honda has not issued a public TSB, and dealer warranty outcomes have varied.
Is the Honda Civic Type R affected by the Civic steering recall?
Yes. 2023-2025 Type R (FL5) units are included in NHTSA recall 24V-744 for an EPS gearbox defect that can increase steering effort.
