Each year is complaints filed in that year’s first 3 years on the road, divided by however many of those years have passed. A model year younger than 3 years is too early to compare, so it is left out of the years named as having the fewest or the most complaints. Recalls are a separate count. The numbers are for the US-market BMW 230i. How we count.

Known issues for this generation

Certain 2018 BMW 230i and 230i xDrive vehicles were recalled under NHTSA campaign 17V-719 because instrument-panel software could leave the display dark at startup or fail to show control and warning symbols while driving, a noncompliance with FMVSS 101. Dealers update the instrument-cluster software free of charge. Campaign population across listed BMW models is about 3,188 vehicles. Separately, campaign 19V-352 covered certain 2019–2020 230i models (among other BMW cars) for improperly folded knee air-bag assemblies that may not deploy as intended; dealers replace the knee air-bag modules. That campaign’s total population is about 5,079 vehicles across several models, not 230i alone.
