Each year is complaints filed in that year’s first 3 years on the road, divided by however many of those years have passed. A model year younger than 3 years is too early to compare, so it is left out of the years named as having the fewest or the most complaints. Recalls are a separate count. The numbers are for the US-market Chevrolet Silverado. How we count.

Known issues for this generation

Recall 21V-051 covers certain 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trucks (among other GMT900 GM trucks) originally sold or registered in Zone A humid-climate states and territories: the front passenger air-bag inflator may rupture and spray metal fragments. Dealers replace the passenger inflator. Related Zone B/C Takata campaigns cover overlapping Silverado model years in other states—VIN-check NHTSA before purchase. Oil capacity splits by engine (about 4.5 qt on the 4.3L V6 vs about 6 qt on the common V8s), so this generation leaves oil_capacity_qt null rather than pick one figure.

Known issues for this generation

Recall 16V-651 covers certain 2014-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles among other GM models: the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) may not operate properly, which can prevent the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying in a crash. Dealers reflash the SDM software or replace the module on vehicles that already had a deployment. Recall 19V-645 covers certain 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks: vacuum from the mechanical vacuum pump can decrease over time, reducing power brake assist and increasing stopping distance. Dealers reprogram the electronic brake control module. Recall 20V-603 covers certain 2018 Silverado 1500 trucks with the 5.3L or 6.2L V8 for the same vacuum-pump brake-assist concern with an electronic brake control module reprogram. Recall 24V-756 covers certain 2018 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 Crew Cab trucks (and HD Crew Cab 2018-2019): a roof-rail air-bag inflator end cap may detach or the inflator sidewall may rupture, letting compressed gas propel the end cap or other components into the vehicle; dealers replace the left and right roof-rail air-bag modules.

Known issues for this generation

Recall 20V-792 covers certain 2019-2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks (and other GM trucks): the front-row center seat-belt brackets may not be secured to the seat frame, so that belt may not restrain an occupant in a crash. Dealers inspect and reassemble the attachments as needed. Recall 19V-888 covers certain 2019-2020 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks whose battery positive cable rings may have excess glue, causing an intermittent alternator connection that can stall the vehicle; dealers inspect and clean the connection. Recall 20V-650 covers certain 2019-2020 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks with an improperly welded driveshaft joint that can separate while moving; dealers replace the driveshaft. Recall 18V-868 covers certain 2019 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 Crew Cab trucks whose passenger frontal air-bag module may have been damaged in assembly so the bag may not inflate properly; dealers replace that module.
