Each year is complaints filed in that year’s first 3 years on the road, divided by however many of those years have passed. A model year younger than 3 years is too early to compare, so it is left out of the years named as having the fewest or the most complaints. Recalls are a separate count. The numbers are for the US-market BMW 840i. How we count.

Known issues for this generation

NHTSA campaign 25V-644 recalls certain 2020–2025 BMW 840i vehicles (with 2020 340i and X6, 2020–2022 740Li, and 2019–2020 X5/X7 among others) because improper starting attempts can locally overheat the engine starter; if engine acoustic protection material is contaminated, that overheating can ignite it and, in rare cases, lead to a thermal event while driving or shortly after parking. Occupants may see or smell smoke. Dealers replace the starter with a redesigned unit free of charge. Vehicles previously repaired under related campaign 24V-576 are included and need the new hardware remedy. The Part 573 report lists about 12,456 potentially involved 840i vehicles within a multi-model total of about 145,102 units.
