Each year is complaints filed in that year’s first 3 years on the road, divided by however many of those years have passed. A model year younger than 3 years is too early to compare, so it is left out of the years named as having the fewest or the most complaints. Recalls are a separate count. The numbers are for the US-market BMW 430i. How we count.

Known issues for this generation

NHTSA campaign 17V-115 recalled certain 2017 BMW 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive, and M4 vehicles (plus Rolls-Royce Dawn) because Autoliv seat-mounted side-air-bag inflator initiators may fail to ignite in a crash, so the side air bag may not deploy. Dealers replace the air-bag modules free of charge. The amended Part 573 population for the BMW 4 Series convertible group is on the order of a few hundred vehicles shared with M4 and Dawn, not 430i alone. Separately, campaign 19V-352 covered certain 2019–2020 430i models for improperly folded knee air-bag assemblies (about 5,079 units across several BMW models).
